🧠 Get ideas to power your future

When I surveyed y’all a couple of months ago, the biggest challenges across the board—for OGs and newbies alike—were finding the motivation to get started and consistently create marketing content.

It’s very easy to use the excuse that you don’t have the knowledge, skill set, or resources to get started with marketing (or get re-started after a period of downtime).

But as scrappy small business owners, Reader, we don’t have the luxury of waiting until we have all those things to get started.

Here’s the thing… Marketing is a non-negotiable if we wanna sell our shit. So it’s time we start treating it like a non-negotiable and just do the damn thing already.

This email is as much for you as it is for me. 🤣

Cheers!

✍️ GET SHIT DONE

Just the tip

When I was a kid, there was one time my parents wanted me to take some cough syrup because I was sick and needed it. And while I was generally a good and pretty chill little kid, there was just something about that cough syrup that really rubbed me the wrong way. So I screamed about it.

And ya know what my mom did? She just waited until I was done screaming. And then she said, “You’re going to take this before bed. I’ll just wait here until you do.” (Kathy Burt is a saint.)

And eventually, I took that damn cough syrup because I knew it was inevitable.

Wtf does this have to do with marketing? Well, sometimes we’re that little Sarah Jane, resisting what we know we need to do and screaming the whole way. But it doesn’t change that we’ve got to do it anyway.

Just the tip

Let’s take a page from my mom’s book and give ourselves time, space, patience, and grace to do the marketing stuff we need to do. And even if we want to throw a tantrum and have to wait a while to get ourselves to do it finally—we’re still getting shit done.

I’ve started finding space in my calendar to block off 30 minutes to an hour every day just for marketing activities.

Do I sometimes spend that entire time wrestling with ChatGPT to give me some good ideas? Yes.

Do I sometimes find myself contemplating life and having an existential crisis instead of writing an email? Also, yes.

But sometimes I also get an email written or engage with people on LinkedIn or update a landing page. And if I hadn’t blocked off that time, literally none of that would get done.

And sometimes I just sit there for 30 minutes. And that’s okay, too. There’s always going to be resistance. But if I don’t give myself time to feel that resistance, then I won’t get past it.

Now, it's your turn

Open your calendar. Find space over the next week where you can set aside time for marketing activities. Whether it’s an hour every morning or just 20-30 minutes in between meetings twice a week, find time to make yourself do it.

No, really. Go do it right now. I’ll wait.

🔧 Try this tool

Use what you have

Repurposing content is the best way to get even more life out of the content you’ve already created. This is a great thing to work on when you’re feeling resistant to writing new content.

Castmagic is one of the coolest tools I’ve used for repurposing. It helps you take the audio and video content you already have and turn it into written content using AI.

why I like it

I love making YouTube videos because they give me so much to repurpose. And Castmagic makes it easy to transcribe and reuse that content.

While I can’t take anything directly from Castmagic and publish it as is, it does give me a shitty first draft to play with. Which is more than I usually have. It definitely saves me hours in the repurposing process.

How I use it

I’ve created recurring prompts that the AI will use to automatically generate the same types of content based on the videos and audio clips I upload. For example, it always gives me 10 title options and some keyword ideas.

But my favorite part about Castmagic is the “Magic Chat,” which is a lot like interacting with ChatGPT. You feed the chat a prompt, and it will generate new content.

For example: “Pull out some really quotable statements from this video that will catch people's attention on social media and get them to want to watch the entire video.”

Even if you don't record YouTube videos, you can still upload audio of yourself talking about a topic and create content out of it!
